AIGA Charlotte Membership Spotlight: Michael Calitri

Michael Calitri is a graphic designer working at Alter Imaging. Visit his site at michaelcalitridesign.com

 1. How and why did you get involved with AIGA? Approximately how long have you been involved with the organization?
As someone new to the design community, I was looking for opportunities to meet and build relationships with other designers and become more connected to the design industry here in Charlotte. I’ve been an AIGA Member since 2009.

2. What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
“When you make a decision, go forward and don’t look back.”

Two years ago, I left a very comfortable corporate gig to pursue an unfamiliar career as a graphic designer. The last day at my job, my boss took me out to lunch and left me with the previous advice. I think it’s easy during transitions, especially when changing up professions, to revert back to something comfortable and available when reality isn’t moving as quick as your expectations. During the last couple years those words have motivated me to become a better, thoughtful designer and pursue opportunities that are challenging and fulfilling.

3. What is your favorite movie and why?
It’s more nostalgic, but my favorite movie is Jaws. This was the first “big kid” movie my parents let me watch so it has a special place in my cinema heart. I used to watch it all the time when I was younger and trick the neighborhood kids into watching it before going swimming… I loved the way it terrified and excited me at the same time. Plus, the movie poster is pretty amazing.

4. What is the best purchase you’ve ever made?
I’d have to say my best “professional” purchase so far would be a decent desk chair. For years I used an old, wooden kitchen chair with absolutely zero lumbar support, definitely not intended for long sitting sessions. I could basically only work for about two hours before my back checked out and forced me to break for a couple hours. I recently upgraded and purchased a super comfy, ergonomic chair for my office. A good chair makes all the difference.

5. What are you currently working on?
I just started working on a freelance branding project for a his-and-her clothing boutique in Boulder, Colorado. We just finished the logo, so we’re starting to design the initial collateral, store signage and website. I’m excited to help develop a new business’s brand and marketing strategy from the ground up.
