Joe Clark is a graduate of UNC Charlotte and recently retired from the U.S. Navy after 21 years. While in the Navy, he served as a Mass Communication Specialist. He worked in television and radio broadcasting, public affairs, print journalism, and combat camera. The Navy literally took him around the globe during his career. Joe relocated to the Charlotte area where he is currently enrolled in the Art Institute studying Graphic and Web Design.
What attracted you to the design profession? Did you have particular mentors or experiences that opened the door to the profession for you?
Could there be a better profession than one that lets you create? I have always been drawn to this industry. After 21 years in the Navy I felt it was time to use my GI Bill and go for it. I have some professors at the Art Institute who bring a lot of real world experience and lots of talent that inspire me daily. Being able to sit down with a blank canvas or blank page in Illustrator and told to make something is amazing.
How and why did you get involved with AIGA? Approximately how long have you been involved with the organization?
I attended a presentation at the Art Institute led by Mark Iafrate this year. I was very impressed by what he had to say and the benefits of AIGA. During the meeting at NoDa Brewery, I felt it was time to join.
If there is karaoke at the next office party, what song will you be singing?
“No Sleep Till Brooklyn” by the Beastie Boys.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
It’s the little details that make all the difference.
What’s your secret talent (big or small, silly or serious)?
I play in two bands. Both are for fun and give me a chance to blow off some steam. We get together to write and record music. It is a great opportunity to be creative in an area I love but have no talent.
Each month, AIGA Charlotte strives to highlight one of its members. If you have any ideas for our next spotlight, please contact Mark Iafrate at miafrate@charlotte.aiga.org.
